What Do You Need?
There is a big difference between what we need and what we want. However, we often get the two confused. A need is something that is necessary to live and/or function. Whereas, a want is something that we desire, but we can live without. The reason for the confusion is that we often take for granted having what we need to live and focus our desire on obtaining what we want.
Before reading on further, take a quick moment and formulate in your mind what we need to survive.
You may have formulated that we need water, food, shelter, relationships (including spiritual), good health, protection, etc. The list is not extremely long, but they are important, are they not?
Now, formulate what you want. (Remember, a want is something you desire but can live without, but a need is required to live.) What was on your list of wants? How long is that list? If we are honest, we will recognize that our list of wants can grow rather quickly. We need so little and want so much.
The confusion between our wants and needs can lead us to becoming so critical of our own lives that we become frustrated and or even angry at God because we feel unfulfilled. If we ever feel this way, we should ask ourselves, “Is my desire necessary to accomplishing God’s plan for my life, or is it only for my enjoyment?” Asking ourselves this question helps us to recognize what God has provided for us in our lives and become more grateful for the good things that make life better. The Psalmist in Psalm 34:8-10 recognizes that God isn’t obligated to grant wishes or fulfill any plans but God’s own. The Psalmist says that those who seek God will find refuge. and will not lack any good thing.
