You Are Not You When You Are Hungry

In 2010, Mars, the owner of Snickers candy bar, ran a television ad with Betty White playing mud football with the boys. The ad showed that in actuality it wasn’t Betty White but a guy who was not playing like himself because he was hungry. Their slogan for the ad was “you are not you when you are hungry”. That message is so true! Not that I believe a Snickers candy bar is the best source of nutrition for when you are hungry, but that when we go without eating it effects our well being and even our personality.

In various studies psychologist have found a link between hunger and emotion. In one study psychologists found that the more hungry people felt, the more angry – or hangry – they became. Working with researchers in Austria and Malaysia, psychologists recruited 64 adults aged 18 to 60 and recorded their emotions and feelings of hunger five times a day for three weeks. In the study they found that a majority of people reported stronger feelings of anger and irritability and lower levels of pleasure.

I believe the same thing happens when you are spiritually hungry. I believe the more spiritually hungry someone is the more they are dissatisfied with their life, their church, their faith, and even God. When Jesus tells his tempter that people need more than bread alone to live, Jesus is talking about a sustenance that comes from God. We need the Word of God in all its forms to sustain us in our everyday life. Are you feeling dissatisfied with life? Are you unhappy with your church? Does your faith no longer bring you the joy it once did? Maybe it is time that you fed the spiritual hunger you have been ignoring. I wish it were as easy as the ad suggested and we could just grab a Snickers bar, but it takes a bit more than that.

Join us this Sunday, July 10th to discover what it is that we need and how God provides it.

In God’s grip,

Pastor Chuck Church
