Why Am I Here?
Have you ever walked into a room and completely forgot why you are there? I know this happens a lot with age, but it has been happening to me for longer than I can remember. Forgetting why you entered a room is what psychologists call the “Doorway Effect”. Our brain is a very complex organ that controls thought, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger, and every process that regulates our body, not to mention memory! So, when we walk into the room our brain is very busy and we often forget why we are there in the first place. You see throughout the day our brain is cycling up and down the hierarchy of action is what allows us to carry out complex actions. “The Doorway Effect” happens when our focus moves between the various levels actions, and temporarily loses the ability to recall why we were there in the first place.
“The Doorway Effect” is annoying but it is also revealing to us how important purpose is. We are annoyed because we lost focus on the “why” and realize the “how” doesn’t matter without it. The same is true for our lives as a whole. Many of us have been stuck focusing on the “how” in life and have forgotten or never discovered the “why”. We may know how we are going to make a living but do we know why we live?
This Sunday we will continue our sermon series called “The Plan”. It is a sermon series that encourages us to connect with God’s plan for our lives and create that plan for ourselves. This Sunday, August 6th, we will focus on the “why” or our purpose for doing what we do or going where we are going. Join us for worship at 8:30 or 10:45 am as we continue this discussion.
In God’s grip,
