They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love

In John 13:34-35, Jesus gives His disciples a new commandment:

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

These words from Christ are the heartbeat of Christian witness. The world should be able to recognize us—not by our church attendance, theological knowledge, or moral superiority—but by the way we love. This is the core message of the hymn They Will Know We Are Christians by Our Love, a song that echoes Jesus' command to let love be the defining mark of our faith.

A Love That Reflects Christ

Jesus didn’t just tell His followers to love one another—He set the example. His love was sacrificial, selfless, and unconditional. He washed the feet of His disciples, healed the sick, welcomed sinners, and ultimately gave His life on the cross. As followers of Christ, our love must reflect His:

  • A love that serves – Just as Jesus humbled Himself to wash His disciples' feet, we are called to serve one another in humility and kindness. Love is not just a feeling; it is action.

  • A love that forgives – Christ’s love is forgiving, even toward those who betray, deny, or harm us. When we extend forgiveness, we show the world a love that is stronger than resentment.

  • A love that unites – The hymn reminds us that we are one in the Spirit, one in the Lord. In a world filled with division, our unity in Christ stands as a powerful testimony.

The Witness of Love

When the world looks at the Church, what does it see? Do people see a community marked by grace, compassion, and unity? Or do they see division, judgment, and hypocrisy?

The truth is, people are drawn to genuine love. It is through our love—our kindness to strangers, our generosity, our willingness to listen and care—that the world will recognize the presence of Christ among us.

The hymn proclaims:

"And we’ll guard each man’s dignity and save each man’s pride,
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love."

Love isn’t just an individual call—it’s a collective testimony. When the Church truly loves like Jesus, the world will take notice.

How can we live out this command in our daily lives?

  1. Practice love in small ways – A kind word, a listening ear, a simple act of service can reflect Christ’s love.

  2. Love beyond your comfort zone – Jesus loved tax collectors, sinners, and outcasts. Are we willing to love those who are different from us?

  3. Be patient and gracious – Love isn’t always easy, but when we choose patience and grace, we show the world a different way to live.

  4. Let love be your identity – More than any label, let love define who you are as a Christian.

Jesus didn’t say people will know we are His disciples by our knowledge, traditions, or words. He said they will know us by our love. As we sing the words of They Will Know We Are Christians by Our Love, may we also live them—so that the world sees Christ in us. How will you show Christ’s love today?

In God’s grip,
