Mark 6:45-56
This week’s reading of Mark, Mark 6:45-56 highlights Jesus' authority over nature, his compassion for his disciples, and the growing recognition of his divine identity among those who witnessed his miracles. Here are some of the key points:
Jesus' Withdrawal to Pray: After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sends his disciples ahead by boat while he goes up a mountainside to pray. This emphasizes Jesus' practice of solitude and prayer, even amidst his busy ministry.
Walking on Water: While the disciples are struggling against the wind on the lake, Jesus comes to them, walking on the water. This miraculous event demonstrates Jesus' power over the natural elements, revealing his divine nature to his disciples.
Disciples' Fear: When the disciples see Jesus walking on water, they are terrified, thinking he is a ghost. Their fear reflects their lack of understanding and faith in Jesus' identity and authority.
Jesus' Encouragement: Jesus reassures the disciples, saying, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." His words provide comfort and reassurance, urging them to trust in him despite their fears.
Wind Ceases: As soon as Jesus gets into the boat, the wind ceases, demonstrating his control over nature and his ability to bring peace and calm in the midst of chaos.
Reaction of the Disciples: The disciples are amazed by Jesus' power over the wind and the sea. Their reaction underscores their growing understanding of Jesus' identity as the Son of God.
Arrival at Gennesaret: After crossing the lake, Jesus and his disciples arrive at Gennesaret. The people recognize Jesus and bring their sick to him, begging to touch even the edge of his cloak, believing that doing so would heal them.
On a scale of 1-10 how chaotic is your life right now. I want to say mine is at 10 but I am afraid saying so will show me that the chaos can still go up to 11. (Yes, Spinal Tap movie reference intended!) This week’s passage has pushed me to consider a few things. First, that even amidst a busy ministry schedule, Jesus took time for prayer and solitude. Second, when reacting to the anxiety of the disciples in the midst of a storm, Jesus demonstrated his divine will over strong forces such as nature. Finally, as I have experienced myself after the storms of life Jesus was there in the midst of the storm to help me through it and will always be there. If you are facing a storm in your life don’t lose hope, look for Jesus to calm the storm.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, your words expose my innermost thoughts and desires. I am an open book before you when I read your book. May your truths work as I read of your holiness, truth, and love. May the power of your word be known in my life so that I might genuinely have the abundant life you came to give. Amen.
