Do We Have To?
For many years I had the privilege of coaching little league baseball for both of my boys. I can say that it was both a wonderful experience and a wonder as to why I did it! Coaching had its ups and downs as well as its entertaining moments. I remember one time in the middle of a game when I was coaching and I needed to substitute a few kids in the outfield. I looked to three of the boys on the bench and told them to go play in the outfield. I wasn’t ready for their response when they said, “Do we have to?” For a moment I didn’t know how to respond. No they didn’t have to, but what was the point of putting on a uniform and going to the game if they were just going to sit in the dugout? I ended up telling them, “Yes, you have to” and they ran out on to the field. I am sure they were comfortable having fun hanging out in the dugout, but that is not why they were there.
I think far to many churchgoers have the same sort of response as those young baseball players. When asked to participate in the work of the church far too many respond with, “Do we have to?” The answer is no. You don’t have to but what purpose are you serving if you are ignoring the primary mission of the church. At Lake Cities our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. How do you plan to make disciples or transform the world by just sitting there and being comfortable? This week and next we will be wrapping up our “Do Something” sermon series, but before we do we will be encouraged one last time to do something while also hearing from other laity who are doing something!
Join us this Sunday for worship at 8:30 and 10:45 AM as we continue this discussion.
