Are You Drowning?

Have you ever been so overwhelmed by the stressors of your life that you felt like you were drowning? The image of drowning is pretty dark but it is also fairly accurate. It is the sensation that you get when what you want or need is just on the other side but you just can’t get there.

There have been many moments in my life where I felt like I was drowning. In those moments I felt hopeless, like my situation would never leave me, but looking back I am thankful. I am thankful that I have so far made it through some of the hardest and most difficult moments of my life. I am thankful to know that when the next difficult moment comes I will make it through again. The feeling of rising above the water and no longer drowning, feels so sweet! One of my favorite bands, Dave Matthews Band, has a song called “Sweet” that describes just this.

Try to swim, keep your head up
Kick your legs never give up
If I could I'd turn it around
Let me out, I wanna get out now
You know it gets so deep

You know it, you're feeling so deep
But if you make it out, it tastes so sweet

This song connects well with how I feel when I am overwhelmed with life’s struggles. It also reminds me that although I can’t see it, I will be okay once again. How did I know I will be okay? A major reason I know I will be okay again is my faith.

The psalmist in Psalm 143 is struggling and feeling overwhelmed, drowning in their own personal crisis. They cry out to God for rescue and know that help will come because of God’s unfailing love. That is our assurance too. This Sunday our sermon series “Calming the Storm” will come to an end with a discussion about “Calming the Storms of Personal Crisis” and the truths we can hold on to to keep us from drowning. Join us this at 8:30 and 10:45 am as we continue this conversation.

In God’s grip,

Pastor Chuck Church
