It is a Hebrew tradition to rend or tear your clothing as a tangible expression of grief and anger in the face of death. Even today, a rabbi will ask a grieving relative to perform the act of rending the cloth before a funeral service. This rending is a striking expression of grief and anger at the loss of a loved one. In Joel 2:13, the prophet tells the people of Israel to no longer rend clothing in their grief and anger but instead rend their hearts. He encourages them to rend their hearts so that they become mended or restored towards God’s will and purpose.
This Lent join us at Lake Cities for a worship series were we will rend our hearts and not our clothes towards God’s will and purpose for our lives. During Lent we will explore 6 ways (mercy, compassion, patience, faith, forgiveness, and humility) in which God desires to restore our hearts . Join us in-person or online on Ash Wednesday and every Sunday morning through out Lent.
