An Epiphany
Did you know the word "epiphany" not only means an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure; but also refers to an ancient church holiday celebrated on January 6?
Yesterday, January 6th, was a terrible day for our country, but it was also Epiphany. It is the day that we remember the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child. These Magi went to find the Christ Child but on their way they were deceitfully asked by King Herod if that when they found the Christ Child that they would tell him where he is. King Herod lied so that he could find the Christ Child and have him killed. King Herod had no interest in Christ, but in keeping his power. King Herod killed children in order to keep his power.
Evil men will do whatever they can in order to keep their power. They will even claim that they too want to seek out Christ. Don't be deceived wise men and women. Is this a political post? Yes it is, but so is following Christ. Being a follower of Christ means that we respect government authority, but more importantly recognize the ultimate authority of God over all matters. Jesus Christ respected government authority while also never backing down from what was right. Never did he attack politicians or make false claims. When given the opportunity for political power, Christ turned it down.
And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” - Luke 4:5-8
Finding Christ in our lives truly is an epiphany. It is a revelation of how we SHOULD have been living, of how God desired us to be at creation. Yes, this is a political post. Not one asking you to align with Republicans or Democrats, but asking you to align with Christ. To say “no” to evil men and women who would call you to violence or harm. To say “no” to evil men or women who would ask you to help them gain power by putting others in harm. To say “no” to evil in whatever form it presents itself in. Align with whatever political party you choose to, but be willing to say “no” when it matters. Be willing to write your senator, congressman, and even your president to stand up for the oppressed, the marginalize, and for the rights of all who are destitute. Be wise men and women who still seek Christ.
In God’s grip,
Pastor Chuck Church.
