Lenten Study Series  - March 20th - April 17th

Dare to explore some of the deeper questions on God? Pastor Rene’ will be leading a discussion on some of the complexities associated with our relationship with God through Jesus the Christ. Younger and older adults are invited to the class. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and share their faith at a desired comfort level. While the purchase of study material will not be required, discussions will be based on Andy Langford and Mark Rall’s book entitled Is This All There Is? And Other Big Questions about God and Life. The congregation will want to take note that the season of Lent begins on Wednesday, March 9, and lasts over a forty-six day period ending on the eve of Easter. The church will hold an Ash Wednesday service and administer ashes as a part of the evening’s worship experience. Service time will begin at 7:00 PM.

Many people observe this season by fasting or by sacrificing practices considered harmful to the mind or body. For example, it is typical to hear of someone using the season of Lent as a motivational excuse to diet. While “giving up” chocolates or soda drinks may indeed be helpful in losing weight, the intent of Lent is to direct one’s thoughts on God as opposed to focusing on the next snack.

It should be noted that the six Sundays in Lent are not actually a part of Lent, and therefore the Lenten season itself is forty days. Sundays have always been excluded from this fast season since they are considered weekly commemorations of the first Easter.

We will be serving our usual “break the fast soup supper” after the Ash Wednesday service. If you are able to donate a Crockpot of soup or a dessert, please call the office and let Suzie know.

In addition, we will be putting together our annual Lenten devotional booklets, so we are in need of your help. Our theme this year is “answered prayer.” If you have experienced an answer to prayer in your life, and would like to have it included in our booklet, please write a paragraph or two about it, along with a scripture passage that fits.   You can drop it by the office or put it in the collection plate on Sunday.
